Stunning picture quality and sound (watch the stampeding cattle scene) on a film that you will either love or hate. There are no extras included on this disc and the picture quality is certainly better than video tape, but only just. The format of the disc is a Region 2 (Europe) but the TV format is NTSC, so unless you have a multi-format machine/television, you will only be able to see this on a PC with a DVD drive. His heavenly escort missed him in the fog, and the pilot must appeal for his right to live. Part of a collection of old films from the Rank Organisation, this was known as Stairway to Heaven in the US. A good quality picture with a noisy soundtrack, but then this film is over fifty years old. No extra soundtracks or trailers, but the documentary does show some insight into the making of the film. Along with waitress Carol Conelly (Helen Hunt) his neighbour Simon (Greg Kinnear) helps put Melvin back into the human race. Along with his new assistant Ms.Kensington (Elizabeth Hurley) he must fight against this foe, and get used to living in the 90's. With over half an hour of extra material, including the trailer for Lost In Space, this disc shows what DVD can be. The subtitles are not very clear, but the animated menus (with running clips for the chapter headings) are excellent. One and a half hours of extra material on Side B of this disc with trailers and extended scenes from the previous Lethal Weapon films make this a good DVD to show off what the format is capable of. The picture quality is excellent, and the menu system is easy to use. All four Lethal Weapon discs can be bought in a box set for $99 in the states, but here in the UK they decided not to do this, releasing the first film later this year. Why the film companies insist on making different versions available for the UK as apposed to the US I will never understand."

descript[17]="Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman are John Steed and Emma Peel in this remake of the 60's TV series. Sean Connery plays Sir August De Wynter, an evil genius out to control the world with his high tech weather machine. The picture quality is excellent, but the lack of any extras is a serious fault. The film itself does little to introduce the characters and the story feels like a series of sketches. The only notable thing about the film (apart from Uma Thurman's cat suit) is the baddie played by comedian Eddie Izzard, and his two words of dialogue!"

The Robinson family are launched into space to colonize 'Alpha Prime', but Dr.Smith stows away and sabotages the mission, leaving them hurtling through uncharted space. Some of the extras are difficult to access (with the cast and crew notes you have to wait for a person to be highlighted in the list before you can access them, and I couldn't find the production stills mentioned on the cover), but the quality of the film and menus is excellent. The US version of the disc includes quizzes, more interviews, synopses of the TV show, hidden trailers, full screenplay and games for a PC, as well as a different interface design. This is another case of the US version having more features than the UK one, which I cannot understand."

descript[20]="Doctors Venkman (Bill Murray), Stantz (Dan Ackroyd) and Spengler (Harold Ramis) jump from scientists to ghostbusters as Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) discovers her fridge has become a portal to a spiritual dimension. This disc was the first I had seen with the PC Friendly software, which includes a dedicated interface for PCs, with web links and a controller interface for playing the film and features. The disc includes trailers for other Bill Murray films, Groundhog Day, Stripes and Ghostbusters 2. This collector's series has one of the few instances of multi-angles in the SFX before and after section, and with all the other features makes this disc a fine example of what DVD can offer. Here firemen only know how to rescue cats, the school basketball team always win and everyone has family values. But soon the two new teens start changing things, and elements of colour start to appear. This is another great DVD for the PC, with a complete script (although different from the final one), cast and crew notes and web links. His major foe is Frost (Stephen Dorff), a particularly nasty vampire. The story has no real surprises but the effects and the overall ambience are enough to keep you transfixed (ha ha - geddit) to the end. It also stars Traci Lords (yes, the well known porn star). The picture quality and special effects are amazing and the disc contains many extras. descript[35]="The original 1973 horror movie is now on DVD in a new transfer to mark the 25th Anniversary. Linda Blair plays Regan, a twelve year old girl who is possessed, and after trying everything else, her mother (Ellen Birstyn) asks 'The Exorcist' (Max Von Sydow) to help. The film was banned from video (I saw it in 1976 just before it was taken off the shelves) as a video nasty, and has only recently been released. The disc is unfortunately a 'flipper' with all the special features on side B. This means you get the annoying messages of 'this feature is on the other side of the disc, please turn it over'. The trailers for other films include Beetlejuice, Fallen, Devil's Advocate and Interview With The Vampire. The TV spots show their age, with grainy picture quality (compared to the clean quality of the film and the BBC documentary) and corny tag lines <i>&quot; The film you've been waiting for, without the wait&quot;</i>. The film may not be enjoyed by new audiences of today, but in it's time it was a classic."

Soon she is crowned Queen of England, but her troubles continue. Also starring Joseph Fiennes, Geoffrey Rush, Richard Attenborough and Christopher Eccleston, this film certainly has the same look as Shakespeare In Love, with some of the same cast, but this is not a comedy, more a Tudor conspiracy. The picture quality is not as good as other DVDs I've seen, and surprisingly there is no trailer included in the 24 minutes worth of extras, although the beginning of the interviews and making of featurette both have the same 'trailer like' shots and voice over."

This remake of the 1937 original which featured Boris Karloff is labelled as the full uncut version, but as I never saw the film when it was released in the cinema I can't tell the difference. Crown is a thrill-seeking billionaire who steals a painting from a museum, and Rene Russo plays Catherine Banning, the insurance investigator hired to retrieve the artwork. Denis Leary plays Michael McCann, the detective in charge of the police investigation. A very good story with some classic scenes reproduced from the original (like the glider sequence, but not the chess game) and the picture quality is as good as DVD can get. The film was produced by Brosnan, although you have to wait until halfway through the making of to find this out, as the first half concentrates on the original movie, also available on DVD. The music promo just has clips from the film with the odd still picture of Sting, who re-recorded the oscar winning song. I still prefer the original version, followed by a later version by Swing Out Sister. Still, the menu system set in a gallery works well, with some nice piano music."

Stanley Kubrick's last film is a strange affair. Shot in full frame and letterboxed for cinema release, you see the full version on the DVD. The UK cut is also devoid of the digital enhancements (extra people added to cover certain actions) of the US version in the masked orgy sequence. The picture quality and sound are excellent as ever with DVD, and the animated menus (computer displays with video camera shots) are well done, only let down by some of the extra material. The interview with James Cameron seems disjointed, fading to black halfway through before returning. Only once is the subject that he is talking about illustrated with scenes from the film. The behind the scenes footage is menu driven (i.e. you can't watch it all continuously) and some of the scenes are silent, showing less that a minute of model making. The test footage of the Queen Alien full size model in action was good, and more of this would have been better than silent shots of models. descript[49]="Bruce Willis stars as Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist who tries to help Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), an eight year old who receives visits from inhabitants of the spirit world. An interesting selection of bonus material enhances this DVD. Neatly divided into sections (although a chance to see them all in one go would have been nice) the material is well explained. The music and sound design could have been added to with a music and effects soundtrack, but as this is a dual layer disc there may not have been enough room. This is disc one of a two disc box set with episodes 1.01 Premiere and 1.02 Throne For A Loss. Both are uncut, but for some reason the first episode played squashed with black bars at the top and bottom, even though it's a PAL 4:3 ratio. This was only in effect on my PC playing through Creative's DVD Encore player and also a software PowerDVD player, and apparently not noticed when played on a standalone player.
